Elo TouchSystems Launches New Generation Capacitive Touchscreen ControllerLatest technology offers enhanced accuracy, improved performance and dual protocol support January 2007 - Elo TouchSystems, the global leader in touch technology and a business unit of Tyco Electronics, has launched a new generation controller for its capacitive touchscreens that offers improved performance and excellent accuracy with dual protocol support for industry standards. Elo's surface capacitive touchscreens are ideal for use in gaming and casino applications, especially bar top and slot machine installations. They are also suited to financial/ATM, retail ticketing, point-of-sale (POS) and kiosk-based installations. New Generation Controller for Next Generation Gaming MachinesElo's capacitive touch technology provides a viable alternative to the capacitive options currently available – and from a world-class manufacturer. Elo capacitive touchscreens incorporate an important rear ground layer for reliable operation in electrically noisy environments. The new 5020 controller – available early March 2007 – enables Elo to provide improved performance and enhanced accuracy, as well as providing support for both industry standard protocols. Capacitive technology offers fast and sensitive touch response with excellent dragging performance making it the ideal technology in many gaming and casino applications. Accurate, Durable, Reliable and RobustElo's capacitive touchscreens are available for 12, 15, 17 and 19" LCD monitors as well as custom sizes offering a drop-in replacement solution for existing capacitive installations. A transparent protective coating makes the overlay resistant to scratches and abrasions and also increases durability. In addition, touch performance is unaffected by everyday abuse and mishaps such as dust, dirt, condensation, liquid spills, contaminants or cleaning solutions. Elo's capacitive touchscreen comprises a uniform conductive coating on a glass panel. The coating is fired into the glass panel to ensure improved linearity over the product's lifetime and, being linear by design does not require a 25 point calibration procedure. During operation, electrodes around the panel's edge distribute a low voltage (approx. 1 to 2V) charge from a high frequency (100kHz) AC source across the conductive layer. When a finger touches the screen, current is drawn from each corner and the 5020 controller calculates the touch location by measuring the change in current, transmitting the touch coordinates on to the computer for processing. Enhanced linearity from patented Z-bordersTo improve linearity at edges and corners, Elo capacitive touchscreens incorporate patented Z-borders, a narrow pattern electrode that has been successfully applied to Elo's popular AccuTouch five-wire resistive touchscreens. "With the addition of our new capacitive controller, Elo now offers gaming and casino customers an enhanced solution for their touch applications," comments Elo Director of Product Management, Michael Bartelmess. "Developers, integrators, OEMs and resellers now have a reliable alternative resource for capacitive touchscreens, one backed by the world's leading touchscreen company that has set the global standard in touch technology for over 30 years." "Customers will also have the additional choice of capacitive technology when choosing from Elo's extensive range of desktop and chassis touchmonitors designed for a wide range of applications," adds Bartelmess. Industry standard compatibilityCapacitive touchscreens with Elo's new generation 5020 controller are compatible with industry-standard software including Elo's SmartSet protocol. Elo drivers are included for Microsoft Windows (98, Me, NT, 2000 and XP). The sensors are designed to fit on standard Elo monitors with serial/USB connectivity and are compatible with existing capacitive offerings on the market.
